Domino saw stars as her helmet slammed against the cement wall. Someone pinned her right arm, so she drove her left hand against the man’s helmeted head and manifested. The blue waveblade shot through his head and he collapsed. Her adrenaline had spiked after she was attacked by the fire team when she landed in the tunnel. Her heart raced, and she took a few seconds to catch her breath.

“You okay?” Isolde asked.

“Yeah,” Domino said, kicking the body angrily. “Just got surprised.”

“See? Helmets save lives.”

“Yes, Mom.”

Isolde helped Domino to her feet. Domino inspected the men’s uniforms in the darkness of the tunnel. The heads-up display gave her an augmented view based on infrared emanating from bodies and light from above. “They aren’t wearing any insignia.”

“They won’t be wearing insignia if they’re Russians posing as rebel forces.” Isolde circled for a moment. “Okay, this way.”

Domino saw the faint radiation emission trail Isolde shared on her heads-up display. It was stronger here and in the direction they were going.

Domino glanced up at the small square of sky above.

“Don’t worry. There are Chevaliers down here. Is it a MacGabran thing?”

“What thing?” Domino followed Isolde.

“To pick fights.”

“Arthur doesn’t pick fights.”

“Former Navy SEAL. Avallach Paladin.”

“Just because you don’t like him—”

“I no longer hate him.”

They picked up signs that a small group was here—mostly infrared markers. Isolde flicked Justice to life and marched along the tunnel. “They’re moving with a purpose.”

“The real question is: what moron thought bringing a dirty bomb into Kiev was a good idea?” Domino mused.

“It’s not about Crimea, but about us,” Isolde said. “We’re springing a trap they set for us.”

“So you’ve said. Who, really?”

“That’s the question we’re here to answer. The easy one is the Chevaliers, but . . . Just stay alert. You’ll get the chance to fight Chevs all you want.”

Domino frowned. “I am trained.”

“But inexperienced. There’s a world of difference.”

“I know I’m not T. S. You two are the best fighting duo anyone has seen. I get it. You’ve told me enough times, so can we stop—”

“Stop talking.” Isolde put up a hand. “Listen.”

Domino heard footsteps. “Pri, a map?”

“I’m getting a degraded signal down there. Juno is going single node. I might lose you,” Prianna said through static.

“We’ll be in touch,” Isolde said, and Justice winked out. “There’s an intersection ahead. That might be where the ambush will be. Let’s ruin it for them.”

“Check.”

“Watch for the drones. Let me get ahead. Either I’ll spring the trap or we can flank them when they come,” Isolde said. Without waiting for Domino, Isolde was in the air, flying down the tunnel. Domino focused on her micro-drive and leapt after her, zipping along the tunnel and eating ground.

Domino felt the widening space around her. “Intersection.”

“I’m past it,” Isolde said, the LEDs of her suit fading in the distance. The tunnel sloped farther downward.

“Walls are damp. Getting close to the river,” Isolde said. “Something’s here.”

“I’m right behind you—”

“Stay at the intersection. I’ll check this out. Might be what we’re looking for.”

“Don’t split the party .
